Question:
About a year ago I smashed my left knee on the sharp edge of my truck door while jumping inside. It was extgremely painfull at the time but I never had it looked at and it seemed to heel over time. However recently I've started having a sharp ripping pain in my left knee when I try to straighten out my leg. Is this cause for concern, it's getting rather bothersome at this point, and should I have it looked at. Thank you, Jeremy Harraden

Dr. Golden
David Golden Dr. Golden is an orthopedic surgeon and the author of the "Knee Pain" chapter in the upcoming "Manual of Pain Management". He has presented numerous scientific studies at orthopedic conferences. In addition, Dr. Golden is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS),the American Medical Association (AMA), and the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA).

Answer:
Trauma to the knee usually causes a recognized problem within a short period of time after the injury. A year later, it is difficult to correlate your current pain with that original injury. But whatever the cause, be sure to visit your doctor and have the knee evaluated. A detailed physical exam is needed.
