About the Knee Hero Series
Knee1 selects its heroes by identifying the top board-certified orthopaedic surgeons across the globe specializing in knee care. Each potential hero must be a proven leader and innovator in his or her field. Knee1 strives to maintain a diverse pool of heroes by actively identifying leaders from various parts of the US and incorporating internationals heroes as appropriate. Once featured on Knee1, the Knee hero becomes a constant presence on Knee1.com, reviewing content and providing information to Knee1 users via the Ask an Expert feature and online, moderated discussions.

Dr. Clarence L. Shields, Jr., specializes in Sports Medicine at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedics Clinic in Los Angeles, one of the world's top facilities for treating orthopaedic and sports injuries. He currently serves as the President of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), and in June 2001, he accepted the organization's Presidential Medallion.

Dr. Nicholas Sgaglione works in both private practice and clinical research on Long Island, New York. He is the head of the Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Division and Senior Assistant Attending Surgeon at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, New York. Dr. Sgaglione is a clinical consultant with Smith & Nephew Endoscopy and has helped since early 2000 with the development of an all-arthroscopic, suture-based meniscal repair system called FasT–Fix.

Dr. Robert B. Bourne: Keeping Track of Orthopedic Medicine in Canada
Dr. Bourne is helping improve joint replacement surgery in Canada by his work founding and directing the Ontario Joint Replacement Registry and chairing the Canadian Joint Replacement Registry. He has focused his private practice on caring for patients with end-stage knee arthritis, using a variety if techniques to relieve patient pain and restore patient function. Dr. Bourne is currently Chairman for the Division of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Western Ontario and practices at London Health Sciences Centre, University Campus.

Dr. Richard S. Laskin: Setting a Standard in Knee Replacement Procedures
Dr. Laskin is the Co-Chief of the Knee Service at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City and is Professor of Clinical Orthopedic Surgery at Cornell Medical School. His practice is limited essentially to total knee and total hip replacement surgery. Since 1973, Dr. Laskin has performed more than 4000 total knee replacements.

Dr. Paessler is one of Germany's premier orthopedic surgeons. His current responsibilities include leading the Center for Knee, Foot & Ankle Surgery and Sports Trauma at the ATOS-Klinik in Heidelberg.

He is a graduate of the United States Military Academy and Emory University School of Medicine. He is a Sports Medicine Consultant to Bahrain in the Middle East and currently practices in Colorado Springs, CO.
