I felt a twinge and heard something in my knee. I immediately fell to the ground and grabbed my knee. It was swollen within minutes and i couldn't even move it in the slightest bit. i actually had to be carried home.

I felt a definite pop and it felt like something terrible had happened - as someone said above it was excrutiating. After landing I thrashed about for a bit onto my back in quite some pain and was honestly relieved when I looked up and saw my leg was still pointing in relatively the right direction.

I have a fair threshold for pain but this was pretty extreme.

The agony subsided after a minute or so, but I could put no weight on it at all and had to be carried off the pitch. Very swollen and extremely painful for a good few days afterwards.

I think unless you've done it, you can't really understand what it feels/ sounds like. I tore mine 7 years ago and never thought I could describe it much more than a pop/ crack/ crunch sound and feeling all at once. I never expected to hear or feel that sound again until I tore the very same knee's acl again. At almost 35 I felt it happen during something so simple as a little jump. Both feet landed square on the ground and my knee buckled inward and snapped/ crackled/ popped. I quickly dropped to the ground as my knee quickly filled with fluid. Surg scheduled in 3 weeks and knowing how tough the recovery is, this time I am worried. Unfortunately the surgery, in my eyes, is much worse than the actual injury...but it needs to be done for stability. As I gained back my range of motion and was building strength, I had my acl brace on 3 weeks post injury date, took a step to the left, and my knee buckled again. Same snap crackle pop and it is swollen and stiff. I was contemplating pushing off surgery until a better time when I could take off work and not be in classes, but after my knee gave out and how much it hurts the 3rd time...I scheduled surgery for ASAP. I called the dr. and they even said there's not much more damage I could've done since I already retore the ACL and meniscus and wait for surgery is the only thing. Now I'm even more careful and unsure of my walking stability than ever before. If you're going to get surgery, all I can recommend is buy jumbo bags of frozen peas or corn as they mold nicely around the knee. Good luck.

Hi krazigirl, Although I'm not a medical professional, I can tell you what it felt like when I tore my acl. I tore my left acl almost two years ago landing from a layup while playing basketball. As my foot made contact with the ground I both heard and felt a significant "pop," then my knee buckled and I could not stand, so I fell to the ground. My knee was pretty majorly swollen within the hour, and major bruising had appeared by the next day. Once I had an mri, it showed an acl tear, an mcl tear as well as meniscal tear. I had arthroscopic surgery a couple months later using my own live hamstring graft and it now feels, I dare say 100%. I tore my right acl this May and actually just had surgery last week. That's why I'm checking out this website, it's kinda comforting to hear people's experiences. Anyway, I tore the right one while running and jumping to catch a frisbee. When I landed, although my knee didn't buckle, I once again heard and felt that "popping" sound. I didn't immediately fall to the floor but definitely had to sit down. Again, swelling proceeded, although not as bad as the first injury and no bruising. MRI showed no meniscal tear or mcl tear/sprain. I hope that can be helpful to you. The best thing to do is have an Orthopedist take a look at it. They can actually diagnose it pretty easily by feeling for an endpoint when pulling your tibia anterior to your femur, of course followed by an mri to confirm. Good luck to you!

While I have never experienced an ACL or PCL injury myself, I have known many people who have. Sometimes it is tough to know how bad a fall or injury really is when there are no visible signs. We have a list of these symptoms to look out for if you have suffered from an ACL or PCL injury. You can find the symptoms of an ACL injury here, and the symptoms of a PCL injury here. Good luck and I hope you are able to find some answers!

I'm curious about ACL or PCL injuries. I have had 4 partial meniscectomies, but never ACL or PCL damage. Yesterday, I tripped and fell striaght on my knee, while moving in a forward direction. Immediately I was unable to bend my knee and it felt a little weak. I am unable to bend past about 120 degrees without taking my hands and holding my hamstring- then I'm able to bend it easily. There is a slight amount of pain, but more of a dull ache inside my knee. How did it feel when you injured your ACL / PCL??? THANKS!
