We went right to surgery. The doctor said that there was damage that he needed to check out. The arthroscopic surgery was fine because it gave us answers to the pain but also gave us questions for the future. We have since seen a doctor in Indianapolis and have scheduled another surgery for June 24th. This doctor has performed many of these surgeries and will take my son's own bone to fill the hole and then remove cartilage tissue to grow outside of his body for 6 mnoths. After the six months he will have surgery again to replace the cartilage. Both of these have a 6 month recovery time. The doctor made us feel very comfortable with his knowledge of the condition and the treatments that are available and what is in the future. He is one of the leading physicians in this field.

I read your reply that your sixteen year old son recently had surgery. Did he try the conservative approach of rest first and it did not work, or did he have to go immediately to surgery?

My son is 16 and has recently had arthroscopic surgery for OCD. He is now looking at an allograft which is implanting bone from a cadaver. From everything I have read it seems that if it is early stages that complete and total rest without any athletic activity seems to benefit many. I have read a lot of material on the internet about it. Good luck.

I have a fifteen year old son who is very active and was just diagnosed with OCD mid-track season. Track is something he just started this spring. He is now being advised to cease all activities for the next several months, including golf, caddying and hockey, which activities have not caused him any great discomfort? Would these activities commonly be excluded. Also, he has had some giving way in the past in the knee, although not regularly. Does this indicate surgical involvement may be necessary?
