Well Dan, I'm no doctor, but I can say that patience in regards to injuries is very important, as hard as it may seem. Watching/reffing/coaching is very hard when you just want to play. If you did in fact take one year off, with no strenuous use of your knee, and you are still having problems it sounds like you maybe should seek other options. Though the fact that after a year off, when you hurt it slightly after coming back, though not as bad as before, could be a sign that it did get better after that year, but just did not have enough time to return to 100%. Of course you should still ice it, and try to take it easy on your knee during down time, but a brace might be an option. I had a couple friends, who after having mcl surgery, wore a knee brace for some time. One of the black plastic braces that looks fit for a robot. But after their surgery, they were not able to play for about a year. But again, I would advise seeing a professional, perhaps someone who specializes in knee care. It is in your kicking knee that you are having problems? Not your planting one?

From article MCL InjuryMy name is Dan, i am 16 years old, fairly fit, very active and quite muscularly built, but short at only 5'3" weighing 135 Lbs. I seem to hae a bad history of injuries, especially knee problems. i have dislocated my left Patella twice, but since then i have strengthened my quads and hamstring and have had no further problems. my current, and most plaguing problem, is the chronic injuring of my ight knee joint. more specifically my Medial Colateral Ligament. It all started quite a while ago ,(over a year and a half now) and has yet to fully heal. Well, over a year ago i took a blow to the outside of my right knee. someone elses knee ironically enough. The blow caused a slight fracture in the top of my Fibula. The walk in clinic doctor i went to merely told me that i should go easy on, when i could painlessly bear weight on it again i would know that i had recovered. Well after about two weeks i was back to normal and back to playing soccer again. About 3 months later (September), i was playing in a game and i went to take a free kick at center. I am still not sure exactly what happened, but my my knee joint gave out. i beleive i scuffed the ground with my toe as i was about to stike that ball and that that is what did it but i am not certain. I went to the emergency room and the doctors there told me i had stretched/torn my MCL. they beleieved it to be a grade II tear a the time and i was told to ice it, elevate it and keep off it for a few weeks. i followed there instructions and i recovered after a few weeks (or so i thought). I went to return to soccer, but now, because of the cold weather, my team was playing in an indorr league, where we played on spongey artificial turf ground. here i again streched/tore my MCL (november). i again am not sure exactly how it happened but it again was when i tried to kick the soccer ball. This time however i was running at full speed and was in an awkward falling position. This time i did not bother with going to emergency, i went home, iced it, and went to a physio therapist, and then later to a Chiropractor. i actually visited 2 different chiropractors and 2 different Physio's. the 2 chiropractors agreed that i had a MCL Injury, and that it was from kicking the soccer ball, but neither could understand why the joint would just give out like it did. Both of the Physio's had conflicting opinions, however they both were also confused as to why it would give out. I am quite athletic and very fit, flexible and strong. they could find no reason why the knee joint was giving out on kicks like it was... on my second visit to the Chiropractor, we began to go through my previous knee injuries, and the one in which i had fractured my Fibula came up, and that is where he got his reasoning for the injury. he said it was due to the fact that my MCL had been stretched in that accident and that it had not properly healed. it made sence to me and the chiro gave me a listof exercises to do, which i did along with others givin to me by one of my Physio's. The Chiro did a slight ligament ajustment and i was fine for nearly a year. I however did not play soccer on a team, i sat the year, and reffed soccer instead. i still played once in a while in phys ed at school but never at a compettive level. In late august of this year were try-outs and, despite having sat out a whole year, tried out and made one of the Select teams. i began practicing with my new team (early october) and was finding it to be fine on my knee. I had been running periodically over the summer and was still fairly fit. After having a few succesful practises plus countless shinny games with fiends, i thought that i would be able to return to playing again. I signed up for an indoor league with some friends and during my first game, i again injured my MCL. this time however i actually watched the joint los stability and the most puzzling part was that it was not when i contacted the ball that it lost stability, it was prior to, during the swinging motion. As my leg travelled through the motion i watched my joint shift and it looked like from the knee down to my foot went bc while the knee up to mt hip continued forwards. a motion that caused obvious strain on the inside of my knee. this happened last wednesday the 26th of november(6 days ago). the pain was and is less than before but it is still an issue. I need some way for this to get better (obviously). Is there a knee brace that i can buy that will greatly help my knee's stability? should i strengthen my quads and hamstring more? should i take another year off? I am very confused with this injury, and as are my doctors. if someone could offe me some advice that would be greatly apprecited. thank you Dan
