knee aching

I have a throbbing ache that feels like is is under and around the bottom half of my knee cap. I do not see any swelling and I have never injured that knee to my knowledge. Even Extra-Strength Tylenol will not aleviate the pain. Could this be bursitis or something else? It is hard to concentrate on anything with my knee constantly aching.
