Hello there,
Sorry to hear of your husband's discomfort, but what he is experiencing isn't actually that unusual.
I had a TKR in June 2005, aged 55. Even though I was running up to the day before the operation, and had strong quads, I too experienced similar symptoms post surgery. You do not say how old your husband is, or whether he has been active before the procedure, but the surgeon does have to cut into the quads during the procedure. A consequence of this, is the body trying to protect the injured part of the muscle by tightening up. This can cause cramps, and pain, and by far the best way of reducing this is to massage the muscles to soften them up. I went every week to see a sports masseur, and she not only erradicated the discomfort in the muscles, but also increased the bend in my knee substantially.
Hope these comments help - please let me know how you get on.
Regards
Wyn
