knee

I am told that I can either get a fusion or else get artificial knee for 20 years and then perhaps would need an amputation and wheelchair. I don't know why artificial leg isn't an option and Im 45 years old now. Please advise me which direction I should be considering whether fusion or total knee replacement. Thanks. Ralph
