Would you get the surgery before the holidays?

I think it depends on your lifestyle. I'm in university so surgery over the holidays/winter break was the easiest option since I won't miss a lot of class or work. I'll also be back at my parent's house so they can pamper me if I need it. Of course I only got 48 hours notice for my surgery so I didn't really have a choice on deciding when to get the surgery. But I think the timing is going to work out for me.

What I thought was an ACL re-tear is in fact a tear of the body and posterior horn of the medial meniscus. This happened Thurs the 18th while playing soccer, I thought I felt my ACL tear at the screw because I felt a pop/tear near my screw, however it seems the meniscus torn was in fact on the opposite side. Weird that I felt the pain by the screw, hence my thinking I ripped my ACL.

My MRI reads as such,
"Status post ACL graft placement w/intact femoral and tibial compnents (yay!). A new longitudinal horizontal tearing of the body and posterior horn of the medial meniscus. Persistant large effusion. Interval resolution of bone marrow edema involving the lateral femoral condyle and laterial tibial plateau."

When I saw my surgeon today, he drained a lot of fluid from my knee and my knee was, well, a knee again! Though it has swollen back a bit since, I have better range of motion, etc. ANYWAY!

My surgeon said surgery wasn't necessary, and that often you can rehab your meniscus on your own. I plan on getting 2nd opinions, along with acupuncture (not enough people do it and it does wonders) as well as start taking replenex, which my acupuncturist/herbal medicine friend suggests as well. With these two things I hope to avoid surgery.

Should I get surgery or not? Surgeon said its not urgent and I can choose whether or not to have it. I've read that some people do fine w/o surgery, but then they cant run because of the pains. I don't want this to be something to come back to me in the future either, however. If I can take care of it early, why not do it? I've given up soccer (after a close re-tear call!) but plan on hitting the gym for weights, bike, and occasionally running still.

Surgery options were as such: if there's a part of the meniscus that needs to be removed, they'll remove is and I'll recoop in a few days. If they have to stitch it together, i'll be on crutches for 4-6 weeks. If I DO get the surgery i'll wait until after the holidays have come and gone, providing I'm not in urgent need of surgery a month from now.

I'm currently on crutches to help aid my walking. I wouldn't walk w/o it seeing as the injury is only a week old. Surgeon told me to move from 2 crutches, to 1, to a cane, to regular walking at a pace I feel I can handle.

Would you get the surgery before the holidays? He leaves for 2 weeks on Nov 18th so i'd want it before then. Would you wait for surgery AFTER the holidays? Would you even get it at all? I'll stop this post now so I don't ramble on and actually get reponses. I have more questions!
