I am not able to reply to the recent pcl forums but I will hope you get this reply by doing it this way. My then "13" daugther is the one who tore her pcl last september. After many different doctor opinions this is where we are at. Injury was sept. 2003. Went through a full season of girls soccer and boys football with injury(the only girl on the team) then went in to have her knee checked out. Torn pcl was diagnosis from mri. She went through theapy and it did not help. She then had arthroscopy done to debride the pcl. It did not help again. Then full course of therapy. Did not help. Then went to best orthopedic doctor in the area. He did a bidex test and said her muscles were as strong as could be. So therapy was not the answer. (she completely obstains from sports at this time.) So we redid a mri. New MRI revealed the pcl healed well (showed past damaged though) The problem was the pcl healed well but was now stretched too far so she is getting bad movement in her knee and they think that was causing pressure which is causing pain and instablilty. They called the past pcl injury a grade 1 or 2. Most can live with this problem. She cannot and has a long life a head of her to be active. If she does nothing the doctor would want to see her once a year to make sure irregular movement is not causing more damage, so far it is not. Yes he said he would not recommend pcl reconstruction cause if you have a good ligament you would not get a replacement as good plus the unsureness of the procedures and not good outcomes and of course the rarity of this injury with patients and surgeons. So again with several opinions and many disagreements on both sides on what to do, we went with the following, She had knee surgery again. (1st one in Feb to debride, then this one on Oct. 7 2004) They did a tibiale tubercle elevation with iliac crest bone graft. (one screw put in too.) Many said live with problem that this is a very hard surgery. Some said she will get over it. Some said this is an old surgery. Well it was a very hard surgery. She has been on crutches for 6 weeks now with no weight on that leg at all. It has been a long hall for a freshman in high school. Well monday we go back to the doctor. He will re xray the knee to see if the bone graft is healed. At the time of surgery he said he was very positive this would do the trick. If it works she should have a normal knee again. If the bone is healed she will then start putting weight on her leg and start therapy. They figure a week and a half before she can go with not crutches and all weight. They want her walking without a limp first. So far things seem extremelly positive but until we start walking on it we will not know for sure. Hopefully by monday this week we will know if this helped or not. Talk to you all soon. PC
