Sorry to hear about your injury Charlie, wherever you are these days, these guys are hard to pin down with all their work. I have tears in my ACL and meniscus as well as a bone fracture. My injury happened roughly 4 weeks ago, and my understanding is that the doctor will usually want to wait until after the initial trauma passes. I surfed the web, curiously looking for knee braces (any search engine), and the most commonly I have seen is, among others, is Donjoy. Again, if you do a little surfing you might want to even purchase one online and they can reach anywhere from $100 - over $1K. Middle of the road ones can average roughly a couple hundred. Nonetheless, check with your specialist, because I asked mine about it and he seemed sceptical of my intention. He told me that a brace should not be used in lieu of getting the procedure done. You might also want to try crutches (I'm considering it right about now since I've been favoring my good leg to the point that I am hurting it), even if your work requires you to move around a lot, like mine does. You should try to keep this in mind since you also have MCL and LCL sprains as well. I've done and continue to do the R.I.C.E. (Rest/Ice/Compression/Elevation) technniques but can only get away with it for so long. In the meantime, keep hounding the doctor(s) to check if someone cancels and you can get an appointment. I wish you good luck and take care.

I recently had an injury, where one of my left knee ligaments (ACL) was torn. I am looking for advice as to what type of knee support, or any other type of equipment to use, and how to take care of it. I live in RI, and here it is realy hard these days to get hold on orthopedists. The doctor who initally examined me, is not reachable, so I cannot ask him, and the earliest appointment I could schedule with a specialist was for August 9, 2004. So I am wondering how to take care of the knee until the appointment, where we will presumably discuss about a surgery date as well (How late is "late" for a surgery in this case?). Unfortunately i am not in a position where i could rest at home during this period, since at the same time I am preparing to finish graduate school, and already starting another project. But of course, if the only way to prevent permanent damage for the future is to rest, I will certainly do so. The MRI Report concludes the following: 1-Acute complete ACL tear of the mid ligament 2-Associated valgus stress contusions and a bone contusion of the medial femoral condyle as well 3-Mild MCL and proximal LCL sprains. 4-Moderate joint effusion. Any type of comments/suggestions are welcome! Thank you very much! Best regards, Charlie
