It depends on your knee and your previous surgery and current injury, of course--as well as what kind of sports you do--but I can tell you that I have had meniscus surgery three times and am now training for a marathon! The first two were for small tears in my lateral meniscus; they just trimmed/shaved around the tear. I was back to running (and mountain biking, climbing, triathlons, and skiing) after the first two surgeries. My third meniscus surgery was more intense (slight tear on the lateral meniscus, big radial tear on the medial meniscus). Recovery took longer, but I am back to running and Ultimate Frisbee (sort of--that sport is just too hard on my knee, I think!). I am training for a fall marathon and think my knee will be up for my other sports, too. I do admit that I feel like it's more fragile--the medial meniscal area is still a little tender/tricky, almost 10 months post-surgery. Good luck--and know that you will probably be just fine.
