Arthrofibrosis is a serious condition that can afflict knee joints that have either been recently injured, operated upon, or both. When an individual develops arthrofibrosis, it is important for them to seek a knee specialist who understands the many causes of the problem so that treatment can be targeted at the specific cause. Arthroscopic treatment of knee arthrofibrosis is definitely effective in improving knee range of motion and restoring function, assuming that the surgery is performed properly and with skill.

I have been suffering with arthrofibrosis/stiff knee due to scar tissue ever since my knee replacement in the summer of 2006. Went in following summer for partial revision and removal of more scar tissue which only caused MORE scar tissue. I now know that more surgery would only cause more scarring. My body forms scar tissue literally overnight. I have heard through an online acquaintance about a procedure called "ASTYM" which apparently has helped her but I find no one in my area who knows of or offers this procedure. I would do anything to get some relief from the terrible stiffness and inability to bend my knee due to the huge amount of scar tissue which completely surrounds my "new" knee. My other knee has been ok til now and now I have a tear in the meniscus. I will not even think of having an arthroscopy since even that surgery years ago prior to my replacement caused me huge problems with scarring. I had no idea this would happen to me as I had never had surgery prior to the replacement. I am wondering if anything will ever come up to avoid this problem BEFORE it happens.
