did you ever consider researching alternatives? There are plenty of knee replacement alternatives you should look into.

Whoa - Thank you, Becky! The Benovolance Board tip is wonderful. I am so sorry to hear that you have had such a rough time - best of luck on your upcoming surgery - I will be rooting for you!

Hi, JimAnn, I know my costs are just amazingly high since I have a complicated knee (that is about to have its 16th surgery on the 30th) at the Mayo Clinic. The last prosthesis they put in costed $35,000 alone! Thank heavens I have Medicare plus a secondary insurance! Anyway, when I had surgery in 2003 at a local Kansas City hospital with a surgeon who only goes there, I was faced with them both being non-providers and I ended up with a $16,000 hospital bill. I found out that this hospital had a Benovolance Board that takes case by case (only if you ask) and decided whether to forgive part or all of what is owed based on need. They forgave the entire bill for me and made all the difference in the world, of course. So, you might see if the hospital you will be in has something similar in place that would be willing to help you. I hope it is true for you, too!!

Best of Luck with your surgery and remember that 90% of the people who have this surgery end up with excellent results!

Will do - Thank you! The quote in the previous post on this site was less than half of what the OS I was referred to gave me, so I know that prices are all over the place - I just want a better idea of the range.

Hi Jim Ann:

Do some consults with the OS' in your area by phone. They may give you a break since you have no insurance! The insurance companies will pay clearly more than what you could pay out of pocket!

Good luck!

JimAnn,

Hi. I had both knees replaced in august of this year. I am working and my insurance paid for it. The total came to close to ...are you ready for this....$80,000.00 . That is the surgeons fee, operating room, hospital stay and inpatient rehab, meds, and physical Therapy. The knee joints alone cost $12,500.00 each.

It is not an easy operation and it takes a lot of rehab to get the knees where they should be. I too was surprised at the cost but I have good insurance otherwise I don't know how I could have afforded it.

I read up on it extensively and found a great surgeon. I am back to work full time and my knees are doing great.

It is a lot of money, especially if you have no insurance but to me it was well worth it and would do it again and reccommend it to anyone.

I wish you luck and hope you find a way to pay for it.

Hi there, My work hours have been cut back and I no longer have health insurance. I have needed a double knee replacement for some time now but the pain has reached a point now where I absolutely must do something. I intend to apply for a loan or mortgage to pay for this surgery but have no idea how much it is going to cost. I would be very grateful if a few folks could tell me how much their double knee replacement surgeries cost so that I can make a more informed decision about where to have mine and what price estimates given me by doctor's are appropriate. Thank you all in advance.
