Thanks guys
My surgeon has been really good. I go in for my first round of surgery next Thursday - just an Arthroscopy to get rid of all the fragments and to try and clean up the lesion. After that I'll be waiting a few weeks and then going back in for an ACI. The surgeon says that I'm going to have a much better chance of getting the lesion fixed properly and avoiding OA later in life if I get this done straight away. It means 6 weeks on crutches and open knee sugery but I'm keen to get the use of my knee back!
At the moment I'm getting a lot of painful locking and giving away. It hurts plenty! I shall continue to keep every posted.

I think the surgeon will be able to advise you. I think you should get those things removed.
Try not to fear the doctor and hospital. This is your chance to get it fixed and have a pain-free, normal life again. The cartilege chunks and bit of bone are not going to go away by themselves; they will bother you until they are removed. Plus, I think they can get trapped in the joint either "locking" it or letting it give way unexpectedly--not ideal!
I had something similar for a while (pain that would come and go and was pretty severe at times, leaving me unable to walk) and because the MRIs were inconclusive (and my HMO was terrible), the doctors acted like it was all in my head or nothing serious. It was awful to be in pain for so long and have no one believe me. They did a few cortisone shots, which I knew wouldn't help (they didn't). I finally got a surgeon outside of my health plan to look at it and he did arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn meniscus (the flap of cartilege was what was causing the pain) and my knee felt GREAT after that! I was able to run again and have a normal life again without being limited by knee pain.
Good luck to you--let us know how it goes!

After visiting another 2 doctors and getting an X-Ray that showed nothing, I was finally sent in for an CT Scan that showed that I have an Osteochondral Defect about 2 cm long on the weight bearing part of me knee. I have three loose bodies floating inside of my knee - one of which looks like a bone chip and two of which look to be fairly large chunks of cartilage.
One of the cartilage chunks keeps popping out from under my kneecap - that is the lump I keep feeling. At least, that is what the doctor thinks.
I'm still in excruiting pain, especially when I'm walking - although the pain can come at any moment and is awful.
All three doctors gave me a different diagnoses because my symptoms kept changing depending on where the loose bodies were currently floating. The doctors also really seemed to doubt the symtoms and pain I was describing because the symptoms did keep vanishing and then reappearing.
I'm now terrified because I'm being referred on to a surgeon. I'm not a fan of doctors or hospitals as it is, and I've never had any good experiences with surgery. I will keep everyone updated.

I'm so sorry to hear you're in pain! I really think you should go to your doctor again. If you'd rather find another doctor, you can use this link: http://www.knee1.com/Physician_Finder. It also contains tips on choosing a good doctor.
This is a diagram of the anatomy of the knee: http://www.knee1.com/Education_Center/Knee_Anatomy. It also contains a physician-guided tour. This might help you pinpoint the exact areas where you are experiencing pain.
Please let us know if you have any more questions.
Feel better!

I've been suffering from knee pain for the last 2 weeks. I did not have an accident that caused this, my knee just felt 'out' one day and it started hurting if I put weight on it. I did at one stage kneel down on it and really, really hurt it (a very sharp horrible pain)...but I don't remember hearing any popping sounds or anything like that. Just excruiting pain. After that I had mild swelling (but not much) and I couldn't straighten it for a day or two.
My knee feels 'out' and I get severe stabbing pain occasionally...usually when walking up stairs or if I put pressure on it without bracing the knee first. When I first injured it I could not straighten my knee completely or bend it properly. I can now straighten it but the knee does not flex properly and I can't lock it. I can bend my knee at a gentle angle (usually) but cannot bend it to a large degree, and at times when it feels 'out' I cannot bend it at all. When my knee feels 'out' I get painful lumps above my knee or on the side of it. It feels like a knotted muscle but hurts terrible if I touch it or rub it. Usually standing and attempting to lock my knee will make my knee feel more 'in' and the lump or whatever it is will disappear.
I have torn my cruciate ligament twice when I was a kid and have had my knee give way from time to time, but have never had anything like this pain before. I did go to the doctor initially and after a very very brief examination she told me that she thought I had hurt the meniscus in my knee and that I would need surgery. She told me to wear a knee brace for two weeks to see if it helped. My symptoms have changed since I saw her then to the ones I described above. I really do not want to have surgery and although I don't usually question doctors I'm not sure what the 'out' feeling is and what the knots are that appear above or around my knee when this happens.
I am a 26 year old female, I'm fit and am a healthy weight. My exercise is walking and swimming - all very gentle since I have a bad back.
