Hi,

Like you I twisted my knee, fell and could not get up without assistance in the 2/14 snowstorm in PA. Before I learned what injury I had, I could walk straight fine but if I turned a certain way (pivoted) or even turned my upper body before my knee, I felt like my left knee (the injured knee) would bend inward toward my right knee. The feeling of this "rubber-banding" collapse of my injured knee toward my uninjured knee was terrible! It felt like my shin bone was comining up past my kneecap and out through the side of my knee.

I had an MRI which told my OS that my MCL (medial collateral ligament) was torn and I also had a pretty significant bone bruise. He felt that the forward stability of my knee joint was ok but I needed to wear a hinged knee brace for lateral stability.

I only got the brace 1 week ago and I will see him again on the 23rd for a 3 week check up. I imagine then he will emphasize knee muscle (quads and hamstring) strengthening which I have already started.

I hope this helps.

Vicki

Hi
I injured my knee 2 1/2 ago at the gym. I was in an aerobics class and turned - I twisted my knee and fell. I couldn't get up (and very embarrased since I am a regular there) . My husband had to pick me up and bring me to the ER. They did an x-ray and I did not break any bones. The ER doc thought it could be the medial meniscus but because my knee was extremely swelled he could not tell. I went to my own doc last week - she also thinks it is meniscus. I have also been attending physio every day. The physical therapist does not think it is mensicus but MCL. In the past two weeks I went from not walking to using crutches to walking...but I am still not walking completely normal. I can straighten out my leg and bend it...but not all the way yet. I still have alot of swelling however it has gone down. I went to physio and the physical therapist is a little shocked that I can walk and bend however the pain is weird..it changes...sometimes in the middle of my knee and down my calf but usually down the side of my knee (medial?). Every day seems a little better however there seems to be more pain now that I am actively trying to walk on it. The really weird thing is that it now feels "squeaky"...when I touch my knee cap it moves back and forth...but does not hurt. The only time my knee hurts is when I actually put pressure on the side of my knee. No one knows what the problem is. I have an appt for an MRI however I can not get in until June!!!!(way too long however waiting times where I live are long!). Since I am progressing ...should I be worried about meniscus? The physical therapist said something about surgery.i Right now I am doing some simple exercises to strengthen my thigh...they are doing acupuncture and the TENS machine. I have a 3 yr old and a 7 month old baby and have no choice but to care for them..walk up stairs and run after a toddler. I also miss the gym and want to get back to working out...which was my only form of stress relief. No one can tell me when I can go back.

Frustated that no one can give me an answer! Also..how long before swelling to go down...it has been 2 1/2weeks. I need to get this knee back in shape because it is hard to care for my small children! I just want to know what the problem is.

Thanks!
