I am a 37 y/o female. I fell and fractured my patella in 3 places 3/20/2001. I did not require any surgery. I was immobilized fully for 6 weeks and partially for another 4 1/2 weeks (during this time I returned to work 3 days/week and wore the immobilizer while I was at work and spent time out of it on crutches with limited weight on my leg/knee when not at work). At 5 weeks post break, I started exercises (mostly leg lifts) at home per the doctors instructions. On June 4, I was sent to physical therapy and rehab 3 times a week for 11 weeks. My pain levels continue at a 3-4 at all times, it increases to 5-6 with walking (shopping for groceries for instance). I have returned to work full time and been released by the physician. I cannot go up and down stairs in a normal fashion without pain levels of 8-10. At least once a day, my knee will just give way with me. I have continued to do exercises of some sort on a daily basis (100-150 leg lifts with 5 pound ankle weights, ride a stationary exercise bicycle for at least 20 minutes/day, or do the home exercise program that they gave me at physical therapy. My pain is mostly around my joint. At times I have a "heavy feeling" in my lower leg down the outside and into my foot and ankle--and occasionally some numbness in the same area (usually after being on my leg for a long period of time). I also have some clicking and catching in my knee (which was there before I broke the kneecap). I have had an MRI of my L-4 (mild diffuse midline bulging) and an EMG that was "at the upper limits of normal". I am extremely frustrated and would prefer that my leg be amputated above my knee, because it is useless to me in this state. Do you have any recommendations or advice as to what, if anything is still wrong or needs to be evaluated. The doctor suggested on 10/30 that I go back to therapy 3 times a week for four more weeks--but I did not go. After the first three weeks of the first set of therapy sessions my leg hurt worse than it did when I started therapy and it only got worse and then came back to the level it is at now, so I do not see therapy as being beneficial to me--SORRY! The therapist told me that my leg is strong enough, that she felt something else was going on. I feel that my leg is stronger now than it was even before I fractured the kneecap. Can you offer any helpful advice or suggest a really good knee specialist in my area. I have been told that it will take time--it has now been nearly 8 months and I do not see any positive changes in my knee.
