Strengthening, comes after the RICE principal Rest Ice Compression Elevation, then gradually you can start strenghtening with excercises and with low assisted weight eventually, dont rush and dont push what you knee is wanting to do if it is not ready for over using then dont do it. I think you should wait at least 8 weeks before you drive. I dislocated my knee, and I wanted to see if I could drive too, but I was just going to go around the block, but I didn't till it got a little stronger. You just have to be patient and give it some more time. Trust me, it will. I know trying to be patient is tough, but in the long run you'll see.

Hi I dislocated my left knee quite badly 4 weeks ago - it is still quite weak from being stuck in an immobiliser but I can walk a bit better on it now and the muscles are slowly getting stronger :-) I haven't been able to drive since it happened (and can't get temp work locally without use of a car) but I don't have an automatic gearbox so am worried about using the clutch pedal with my weak knee. I was going to ask the PT about this today but they cancelled my first appointment and will 'post' me a new start date (so goodness knows when that will be as I had to wait 2 weeks for this one!!). My doctor has said I can try driving on a quiet bit of road to see if it feels ok, but I am a bit nervous and don't want to risk having an accident!! Does anyone here have any ideas from their own experience of how soon I should be thinking about driving? Is there a competency test I can try... like being able to lift my leg to a certain point without pain or muscle weakness etc?? xxClaire
