I was 22 when my knee first decided to swell. I am now 42 and still have problems with swelling and pain. In 20 years there have been no visible signs of any type of disease to the orthopedic surgeons visited besides the swelling. They tested for gout, Rheumatoid arthritis and everything else they could think of. Finally, my doctor just seemed to give up and told me that I must have some type of arthritis even though there are no signs in the sed rate or X-rays. I do also experience some pain in my fingers from time to time. There are times when the swelling disappears and I feel fine. There is no real reason for this disappearance of pain and swelling as I tried to document what I am doing, eating, physical activity....whatever. I am a very upbeat person and this swelling doesn't hold me back. I have hiked many times even a few times up Mount Washington with it semi-swollen, go to the gym frequently and garden during the summers. I can hike and work out on the crosstrainer and nautilus at the gym and both of these activities hurt less than if I spend and any time walking. It is almost like fluid settles when I walk but when I am working out the fluid is circulating better. Just entering my next period (as I sit typing with a knee the size of a grapefruit) of swelling and frustration I thought I would send my word out to the world to see if this is something that has happened to anyone else. If any doctor reading this thinks that there may be a shot at doing some tests that may be new or, really just anything that may help, please let me know. send to June at: JuneGog@aol.com Thanks!
