Hi,
Swimming and cycling seem to hurt my knees too. For me, it's not about impact so much as it's about the motion of bending and straightening my leg. We recently picked up an old nordic track skier from a local thrift store for about $35, and for me it has been a miracle!

I can get a good workout, and build leg muscle without having to bend and straightening my knee much at all. It really helps me get a workout with minimal pain.

ps. Since they aren't very popular anymore you can find them used for cheap.

Best wishes

hi, ? suffer from CM grade 2 and am doing PT for 4 month now. I have the same problem when I swim. After swimming my injured knee hurts for a day or two. I try to swim 2 days a week for a distance of 750 - 1000 meters freestyle and back swimming. My trainer makes me work my legs with the kickboard (4x50 m breast and 4x50 m back), although my legs are much stronger ? think still not strong enough and therefore ? have (and maybe also you ?) the knee pain. You can test your leg strength with a machine called cybex (avaiable mostly at university hospitals). You could also try cycling but ? have no experience with that because ?m waiting for the better weather. IN short ; you should train your legs and the only two things (beside surgery) you can do is swimming and cycling. What grade is your CM ?

I was told to swim or use a stationary bike for my chondromalacia patellae, but it is hurting my knees, particularly if I am swimming fast when the water is really cold. Is there a swim "kick" that should be avoided, or is it just a matter of trying to keep a slower pace so as not to aggravate knees? I saw on here where a sixteen year old had to quit swim team because it was hurting her knees too much. So I am left to wonder, how is swimming supposed to help me knees, if it makes them hurt?
