I was a marathon runner and had microfracture surgery in 2004. It took a year of PT and a lot of work on my own. I started on a stationary bike and 2 days a week of wt training, strengthing me legs. And don't forget to stretch. After a year I began to run again, not like before but I run 2-3 days a week, 4-7 miles. I like to run on trails and stay off hard surfaces. I can cycle with no limitations and play golf with no problems. Stick to rehab and don't give up, it takes a while.

I had MFX 6 months ago. I had a lot of pain afterward even more so that pre op. After 4 months of no change OS ordered another MRI, it showed that the MFX had failed, and the MFX defect had actually increased in size its now 3cm x 1 cm. My OS sent me to a sports med specialist whom I saw yesterday. She is recommending osteochondral allograft, she thinks ACI would be a waste of time being as that my defect involves the bone. She did however notice some OA in the petella femoral region and so she is consulting with her partner who does joint replacements to see if an unicompartmental replacement would suite me better. I will find out the outcome end of this week first of next. By the way I am 40 years old and quite active. For me MFX is a joke doesnt work, it only produces fibrocartilage if any, and thats nothing like the hyline cartilage that you need for gliding those bones along each other. If I were you I would go for OATS or ACI theres alot of info on both out there one good place is cartilage doc.org, tons of info there. Good Luck. Peace Michele

I'm new to this forum and just had microfracture surgery myself in October. So I'm wondering the same thing. Your surgery has been over 18 months ago - how are you progressing?

Hello,
I recently had my first athroscope and in the process the OS found a lesion in my hyaline cartlilage on medial femoral condyle. What looks minor in the athroscope video was attacked by my OS back to the bone and then he drew blood from the bone using a bone owl. I believe the process was called microfracture (report pending).
I was wondering if anyone has had this procedure? If so did you find it a success? Did you make it back to physical activity such as running or cycling? How long did it take? Did you have a set rehab program?
I am 25 and had just completed my first half ironman event and was keen to at least keep fit. I have been rather depressed since I have not been able to continue an active lifestyle.
