dgill, I am interested in your post. I have just had a microfracture. Did your OS refer to any research about his statements? Are you are aware of any? I wonder why it is still done.

Hi Karen, I was having a similar discussion today with my OS. He is not in favour of microfracture. Apparently the cartledge which regrows from the microfracture is fibrocartledge which is not adequate for weight bearing surfaces and over time will deteriorate again. He is encouraging me to have cartledge plugs instead- harvested from another site and grafted into the affected area- not unlike hair plugs.
A trial is currently underway for a new process which uses a gel material added to the microfracture site to form a scaffold for new cartledge growth- BST-CarGel, this sounds promising but is a year or two in the future.
I wanted to be part of the trial, but my medial femoral defect is only 3cm square and the trial requires a defect greater than 4 cm sq.
Best of luck

Hi everyone,
6 years ago I had 2 back-to-back scopes. Durring the 2nd. one my OS had to take out the majority of my cartiledge due to how defective it was. At this time he talked about the Cartiledge Transplant, which for obvious reasons I wasn't even about to discuss with him. Now I have torn what is left of my cartiledge under the patella. He is now talking about the Mictrofracture procedure. Luckily, my OS is at the steadman-Hawkins clininc in Vail, Co. From the research I've done they have had great advances in the procedure and in PT. My question for everyone out there: Does anyone know which of the 2 procedures has better long term results? And which procedure has a higher risk value?

Thanks,

Karen
