I definitely think you should lay off the running for a while. If the pain is below the knee cap, it may be inflamation of the patella tendon. You should ice it and let it rest, then it should stop bothering you. Just don't push it too hard. Running messed up my knee really badly, so now I would just be happy to walk with no pain.

If I were you I would lay off the running until the pain subsides. I had pain similar to yours and did not lay off and ended up in months of physical therapy and rest. Once the knee heals, then start running again. Speaking from experience, A fellow knee sufferer Good luck!
