hi there; please don't think im just a busy-body telling everyone to be careful about total knee replacements but, they are not like your own knee. they will last about 10 years in the normal person but will not carry a police officer in their strenuous workday. the first one can be put in quite easily with a lot of pain for some and only a little pain for others but, the next time around gets much harder with more pain and suffering along with much more physio therapy. a lot of people are pushing these operations for nearly everyone and they should not be doing that. better to try the operation you mentioned. you have nothing to loose. once your natural knee is gone it is gone for the rest of your life. i can walk on hard floors now without the excruciating pain i used to suffer but i have to take 2 tylenol 3 to sleep now that the cold damp weather has set in and i am taking physio 6 plus months later 2 times a week and while it straightens out properly i am getting only 90 degrees flexion [bend]. i am afraid it is never going to bend any further. i should be getting 130 degrees at this late date. i had an excellent surgeon and my female physiotherapist is the tops. i am just happy wcb is still paying everything but i am getting scared about it. please think this out before you have a tkr. delbert.

over the years i had most of the things done to my injured knee your doc was suggesting for you plus i had a hi tibial osti otimy or wedge taken out to place weight on best part of joint. it was quite successfol for 10 or more years. you are 20 years too young for total knee replacement. i just had one done finally at 15 06 04 and i am 63 years old. anyone suggesting you have one done at age 41 is placing you in a desk job plus many problems in the future. tkr are only ment to make you mobile over 60. no real work, not much exercise except slow walking. no kneeling down and the list goes down. i am grateful for the relief of my pain that was 24 hours but it is not my own natural knee. hope you check this posting after such a long time. delbert.

i am a 41 year old female police officer who was injured on the job 11/15/03. as a result of my injury i had a acl reconstruction (allograft, lateral meniscus repair, and medial meniscusotomy. during surgery it was discovered that a 1.5x3.0mm piece of cartilage came off my femur (medial) which was removed and cultured. because this is work related, the w/c carrier wants me to have knee replacement surgery. my doc says the carticel will do the trick. what are advantages/disadvantages of carticel vs knee replacement
