Hello, If the procedure works, the recovery time is worth it. My pain is minimal. I just got permission today to start putting weight on my leg and I'm very excited. However, the point is to take it slow . . . that's what all the literature and doctors say. I haven't had any trouble with the insurance company. However,I'm the 62 ACI (Carticel) procedure my doctor has done, so they seem to take that into consideration. They pre-approved everything. It doesn't make sense to approve the first and not the second. It's an FDA approved procedure so they shouldn't be able to deny it if your doctor says it's necessary. Odds are that you're dealing with the first level, who's job it is to say no. . . you need a manager - or a lawyer . . .

Hi Thats sounds like a long time for recovery but I am up for it I have had recoveries like that before. Did you have alot of trouble with the insurance company? We are having trouble getting the second procedure approved. The insurance company is asking for information that doesn't even make sense to ask for. Carrie

I had surgery recently and am 6 weeks post-op. I'm still non-weight bearing. My doctor said patience in recovering is everything. My expectation is 6 weeks more with increasing weight bearing, then at least a full year of rehab. It actually takes at least a full year for the cartiledge to harden into regular cartiledge. Patience is a virtue in the rehab for this procedure.

For those considering Genzyme Surgery. I thought my experience might be helpful. In August 2001, I had a Genzyme Implant along with a tibal osteotomy. I was non-weight bearing for 6 weeks and using a crutch or came for 3 months and there was lots of rehab. In April 02, I had additional surgery to remove two of the screws used in the osteotomy and the doctor said that the graft looked great. I have to say that I had much anxiety while making the decision to have this surgery. It is now 10 months later, I am pain free and with the exception of the large scar, I am happy I had the surgery.
