It may have all the properties of Carticel with out the 'invasiveness'. My OS said he could attempt to correct my problem now with Carticel but suggests waiting until http://www.biotissue-tec.com has their gig together for US clients.
Good luck

I had ACI in Sept. 2003 along with a lateral releaseand patellar realignment. The ACI portion of the surgery went great although healing time is quite long. 3 mths before I was really able to walk without assistance. Since the surgery in Sept I have had to have 2 additional surgeries. One to clean up the periosteum that was not absorbed and another to debride the overgrowth of tissue from the ACI. The ACI surgery itself was a breeze but if you are having other procedures such as I have had, hold on for a very long recovery time.

i am new to all of this and i am awaiting approval for carticel. what is carticel ii? my workmens comp carrier kept insisting that carticel was experimental and not fda approved. i was able to prove them wrong. i am wondering if this is there hang up and that they are looking at the wrong procedure.

I asked my doctor about it before surgery on 12/1. He said it is still a number of years away. Due to my age (46) and the condition of my knee, he didn't feel it was worth waiting. The question will be effectiveness vs. the level of invasiveness. According to my doctor, and based on the situation, the invasiveness may be less of in issue than getting it done before the knee degenerates too much.

Has anyone heard about Carticel II? Apparently it is in the Genzyme R&D pipeline and it may involve minimally invasive techniques (thus no need for the arthrotomy). As someone likely facing this surgery, I would like to see if I can hold out until this is a possibility. Has anyone heard anything along these lines?
