Hi- I have bad knees and recently tore my meniscus (again). Had surgery and they trimmed it up. The took a cartilage biopsy and sent it off to Gynzime lab for possible Carticel procedure. I'm 38 years old and a Triathlete. Want to continue triathlons but I'm just not sure what to do at this point. I have read some "scary" things on Carticel (i.e.- LOTS of pain and not great results). I realize that recovery takes a lot of work and I am up for the challenge but I'm just not sure and have not found enough feedback as to ..........is this worth it?
Thanks,
Mike

I had ACI surgery 7 years ago after having a total of 6 surgeries. Everything was going great until a couple days ago when I started having pain on the inside of my knee, it feels almost like having a sharp catch that will not go away. The only thing I can remember doing to it was maybe back in April I feel of a curb and my knee hit the edge of the curb. It swelled immediately and I had a bruise, I was able to walk on it even though it felt like fluid was built up. I notice that you felled on yours did you have pain immedialetly or did it begin several months later? The pain get intense and i don't know what to do about it.

Hello. I'm a 34 year old woman who has had knee problems for 1/2 her life. When i was 12 years old i fell 20 feet out of a tree and my knee hasn't been the same since. I had at that time gone through x-rays and needless to say it did not detect my problem. I was to go to a specialist for further testing. But when i found out a needle was involved...i chickened out. Needless to say, i went for 6 years with constant pain and no diagnosis. Then at 18 i smartened up and went. Only to find out that i had a meniscus tear. During the next 6+ years i have had 3 surgeries on my knee. Now for the last 2+ years the pain has started again. Now the problem is i have NO interior cartilidge and have developed minor arthritis. I recently went to a new Ortho who referred me over to another Ortho who specializes in these type of injuries. Back about 5 months ago he mentioned having this Carticel procedure done. I have been doing alot of thinking about it. But i'm looking for anyone who has had this procedure done to give me some insight. I'm thinking maybe this may be a good thing for me. I don't want to be 40 years old with serious arthritis, and knowing there was something out there that could help prevent it. Thanks for listening to me babble.

I have to admit that rehab was tedious. When you watch movies and television, you see rehab as whirlpools and massages! I didn't get either! It started fairly slow for me because I had gone through a procedure a couple of months prior where they put pins in the still partially attached defect to see if it would reattach/heal to the bone. This meant 8 weeks in a straight brace, non-weightbearing. This weakened my leg significantly. I started with the CPM machine the day after surgery. This continued for 10-12 hours a day for the first 7 or 8 weeks. Slow walking on a treadmill came next as well as leg flexing/lifting exercises. As I improved, step exercises and light leg presses were added. As the strength returned, my walking speed was increase, incline added, and more weight was added to the leg press. Total time going to rehab was about 6 months, but I continued to the exercises at home after that. I would say it was about a year before I saw just how significant the improvement was. I actually regained complete mobility and flexion, which surprised the therapist. When I left therapy, the strength of the "bad" knee was only about 14 percent less than my good one. I have never regretted my decision.

It's great to hear from someone who has 6 years of success to tell about this procedure. I am really sorry about your accident and hope you will be able to push through the system to get the care you need. I just had cells harvested July 30 and expect to schedule the implantation in about 6 weeks. I am quite concerned about the rehab part. What was your experience like?

Hello, Everyone. By reading the discussions already posted, I thought I could help some of you with your questions and concerns. I am 6 years post ACI, and up until May, everything was unbelievably successful. I had the Carticel procedure performed on my left knee after losing 2 sections of cartilage. Prior to the surgery, I experienced almost constant pain, popping, and locking. I walked with a noticable limp that worsened as the day progressed, or if I attempted more physical activities. After the surgery and rehab, I felt as if I was being given a whole new chance at life. I could run, jump, dance, play racquetball, etc. The electric slide was no longer the "forbidden dance" for me! Unfortunately, I suffered an accident in May where I landed on my knee on a cement surface. Since then, it is as if I never had the procedure. I am currently trying to get my new insurance company to allow me to go see the doctor who performed the procedure so that I can see what I have done. The network doctor told me it was just a knee tracking problem common to women. Somehow, I don't believe him since one of his partners diagnosed the same thing 7 years ago. Four surgeries and another doctor later, I finally had some answers and relief. I would be happy to answer questions or concerns anyone might have. My question is has anyone else had the procedure done and then reinjured themselves? What was the outcome?
