Lateral Release is for when you have problems with your kneecap? correct because my knee keeps giving away, and my kneecap keeps sliding from one side to the next not even kidding it hurts like you know what. I can't seem to find a doc who will listen to me, I'm getting irritated I almost fell down the stairs twice in one day, I also have a problem with it slightly dislocating, still oh and did I mention that I have a large bone spur in that same knee that I wasn't supposed to even have the first surgery on, it was only arthroscopic. but he screwed up really bad and left to florida without a word to any single one of his patients not even a note or anything. He left every single one of his patients, that tells me he is a surgeon who screws up and then says he has to go in and fix the mistake all for the kickback, meanwhile my knee is really screwed up because of the arthroscopic. He was a horrible doctor, not all doctors are bad just this one, oh and the second opinion I went now on my third but my neighbor just had his partial reconstruction done so he gave me his doctors name, pray i get something to help my kneecap stay in place. arrrgh anyway, sorry for rambling, and I am glad thing went well with your surgery. Have a great night. I'd rather be under and not know whats going on around me I'm a wuss though lol...

well i've had my surgery ( a week ago today)... unfortunately i wasn't allowed a local or spinal anaesthetic as the surgeon felt it wasn't appropriate in the case of my op.

The general was ok tho... no bad after effects.
Slept for a good while afterwards (they were in no great hurry to move me from recovery once they'd established i was out of the anaesthetic ok as i was last on the surgery list) Slept in recovery and wasn't really aware of moving back to the ward.
A little hot and dizzy the first time i sat up. lying back down and having a fan on sorted that in ten mins and i stayed lying down for a good while. Once i was sitting up again though, i was fine.

i'm sorry i didn't get to be awake during the procedure as i was really interested to see what went on.....but they did do a fair bit inside the knee so maybe it was better this way.

anyway.... one week post op and doing fine..... far better than any of my colleagues ( I work on a community rehab team) expected

follow up appt next Wednesday so i'll know better then how things are.

Many thanks for your thoughts and views Stakro.
I was very much leaning towards local rather than general anyway as i hate not being in control. I'm more worried about the anaesthetic and any complications from that than I am about the surgery itself.
Hearing from someone who has first hand knowledge of both options has really helped to quieten any doubts in my head.
I'm very nosey and love to know whats going on around me... i'm actually very curious to know exactly what is going on in the theatre and not squeemish about it being my knee thats getting operated on.
Having none of the woosiness etc from the general is a definate plus for me too
I hope i'm given the choice.. i'll definately choose local rather than general.
Thanks again :-)

I have had both general and local anesthesia. With my 1st knee surgery I had general because I was feeling really nervous about having surgery for the first time. Then I had a discectomy for a herniated disk in my back and had a spinal with heavy sedation. I basically slept through the whole surgery, but they were able to wake me up when they wanted me to respond to make sure my nerves were still working throughout the surgery. Then I had 3 surgeries on my other knee (in 1 year!) and had a spinal with all three and was awake and watched them as well. I will always do a spinal if given the choice. Plus, I like knowing what's going on around me and what they're seeing/doing during the surgery. And, it's a lot easier coming out of a spinal than a general anesthesia. You don't get that foggy, groggy, weird feeling at all. So, those are my thoughts on that subject. Hope it helps. Good luck to you!

I'm going in for lateral release of my left knee in a couple of weeks time.

I wondered how many of you here have had this done under general and how many under local anaesthetic.

i'm keen to hear your stories and views on the anaesthetic you chose.
I#d much rather not have a general anaesthetic. Is this wise?
