Knee cracking and pain

My right knee gives a cracking sound whenever I lift a handicapped person in the bed by his knees. My weight shifts to the right knee when lifting and moving the handicapped person over in the bed. My knee cracks. Now I am experiencing a mild pain in the right knee after two weeks of this cracking sound. What Can I do to relieve the pain?
