It takes a long time for the muscle to build up again. I'm in a similar situation- I had patella tendon reconstruction 11.5 weeks ago and I'm hoping to be ready to play soccer next fall. It took weeks before there was any real definition and I'm only just now working on full body weight squats single and double leg. Progress happens quickly though, just focus on one step at a time and you'll be ready to play in 6 months.

Hi

First and foremost, don't worry about the muscle issue - your knee has just been through a fairly major op and it's only been four days! Take your time, and don't worry - the rest of your leg will get better with time, patience and the right PT.

Second, 6 months is going to take quite some recovery. Admittedly I'm a little behind with my physio (mainly due to work travel), but I'm at 4.5 months post op and I've only just started light running. I certainly don't feel like I'll be kicking a ball in 1.5 months - much as I'd love to return to the game that put me in this situatiom. But I was autograft from the same leg so perhaps there is hope for you.

That said, base your recovery on your recovery, and what your PT reckons. Whilst you can do everything you can to help it, your body will only heal as fast as it wants to and I'd strongly advise waiting until you're fully fit before you throw yourself back in. You have youth on your side (by the sounds of it), however it's better to miss the start of the season getting fully fit, than missing the whole of it because you went back too quick.

Good luck, and keep us posted!

I ended up getting an ipsilateral patellar tendon graft which really isnt what I had wanted. But I trust the doctors decision. I'm four days out and feel pretty good. Not much pain thanks to ice and meds. But i'm worried about my muscles. I can't flex some and most aren't defined or firm. This is what happened when I was first injured, but not to this extent. The good news is I was able to walk with the brace on three days after. Not normally, of course. But with a limp. I can fully extend my leg and have about 60-65 degrees of flexion. I'm hoping this is above average as I only have 6 months to heal before college soccer starts. Please let me know if there is anything in particular I should to help further my results.
