knee pain

Dear sir, I am an army officer, which itself dictates the kind of physical fitness I require. Earlier(a month back),I was physically fit to excellent standards of the army .My daily exercises included 1 hour of jogging/running/cross country running/strengthening followed by 45 min of sports(hockey/basket ball) followed by 30 min of swimming, in morning .In evening, I use to play hockey/basket ball for 1 hour followed by squash for 45 min followed by 50 min of continuous swimming(breast stroke). A month back I met with a motorcycle accident, at night .Next day morning I went to hospital where fracture was ruled out but my knee was paining and stiff. However, swelling was less and I took 3 days bed rest with RICE treatment. Even after 10 days the pain persisted on the medial side of the knee and there was a definite stiffness in the joint, however I was able to walk with a slight limp. I took a month leave for rest and treatment .I made an appointment with an orthopaedic surgeon who, after examining me told that I had injured my ACL and medial meniscus. Quadriceps exercises were recommended to me (leg raise and pushing of knee to the floor).Definitely they helped in reducing the pain and stiffness .On my second visit to the doctor he told that there is a definite improvement in my condition and may avoid surgery. I continued with these exercises although I increased number of repeats and sets from 3 to 4(4 times a day). On my latest visit to the doctor he told that there is a little improvement in the knee and I should put some ankle weight also in the leg raise. On doing so my hip started paining and I went to rehabilitation centre where physiotherapist taught me some new exercises of resistance like leg raise with ankle weight while sitting on a bench and ½ squats .Since last few days I am undergoing this programme of ultrasound therapy and exercising 4 times a day as told. I am also taking Etoricoxib and Acelofenac tab once a day .I want a speedy recovery and want to get back to my previous shape without undergoing surgery. Although, physiotherapist has also ruled out surgery if I respond to these exercises well, which I am. Presently, I am walking without any limp and pain .However, I find difficulty in climbing down staircases and the front of my also clinks, sometimes. There is still some stiffness in terminal extension and terminal flexion which is more in early morning and reduces when I exercise. I haven’t tied to jog as directed by my physician .Please give me some directions on my exercise matrix and diet to get back in shape without surgery. Yours sincerely, Capt Shailesh
