Iliotibial Band Syndrome
My 18-year-old son has had ITBS since last January. The onset begin in his right knee as he increased his distance running. Running stopped for a couple of months, and he began PT and stretching, icing, deep massage. Over the next few months, his condition appeared to improve, but would return with everyday walking. With any attempt to run 1/2 mile, ITBS returns. In the summer, he saw an orthopedic doctor, then a sports medicine doctor. More stretching, rest, ice, PT, a couple of cortisone shots, vioxx, celebrax, etc. The tightness never went away, pain did briefly. Any attempt at running again, even after months of rest was in vain. Since September, no running or cycling whatsoever, another series of deep massage, stretching the ITB, hamstrings, gluts, orthotics, icing. He hasn't run or done any physical activities with the knee (it has now become both knees), but he is in constant pain during the day and night. Now he is seeing a massage therapist who his looking at hip and back alignment.
Orthopedic surgeon felt surgery wasn't recommended as it has a relatively low success rate. Surgeon, sports doc, PT all say this is the worst case they have seen.
We are desperate for relief from pain. Could extensive stretching and massage have damaged nerves and tissue?
We are looking for a comprehensive clinic that will look at all possible factors for the cause of the problem.
