should i be worried?

About 8 months ago I was skiiing and seriously twisted my left knee. I didn't noticed my knee was injured until the day after the accident because I had pulled a muscle in my right knee and the pain in that knee covered up the injury of my left knee for awhile. Once my right knee felt better, I started noticing I couldn't completely bend or straighten my knee, it was swollen for a long period of time after the accident, and I often felt discomfort walking, running or climbing up stairs, I was also a lot slower at running etc. (after 8 months i still am not as fast as I used to be). I figured it was just a minor injury and that exercize would do it good, so i would participate in lacrosse practice and games. After about a month or so I started to get a little bit worried because after making sudden turns or just randomly, my knee would give out for about 20 seconds and I would fall over or not be able to put weight on my left knee. The more problems I had with it the more I figured I had to exercize it. As summer came allong I felt like it was getting better so I stopped worrying about it. Then field hockey season started and I noticed how sometimes it gave out a little, but not as serious as before. I started to regret not seeing a doctor, even though I was sure it was some sort of minor acl injury, because I had all of the EXACT symptoms of an acl injury. I felt like it was so long ago that doctors would give me a hard time about not going sooner and that what could they do now that is been so long. That is why I am writing this. Should I still go see a doctor, even if it is feeling better? And if so, what will they likely say? Does my injury sound very serious? Will it get better over time with some exercize, or is exercize bad for it?
