COMMUNITY: Patient Stories

I'm 14 and a dancer and I need your help!

I am 14 years old and I am a serious dancer. Dance is the one thing I have to get away from the stresses of everyday life. I get to have time to just let my feelings loose and not think about boys, family, money problems at home and school work. Everything was going fine until I suffer 2-3 blows to my left knee. My parents thought I was just being a cry baby. About a year of me complaining, they finally took me to the doctor, who informed me that I have chondromalicia patellae. He told me that because dance is my passion I should not have to quit. He then prescribed me physical therapy. I went to physical therapy and things got better and my knee stopped hurting. About a month later, the pain has come back now and it's worse than ever. Dance doesn't make me happy anymore. Sometimes, it is so painful I start to cry in the middle of class. It's not fair because I am only 14 and I shouldn't have to go through this. Bending down to my bottom locker is unbearable and going up the stairs is my school is so painful. I can't stand this and I complain everyday, but my dad doesn't seem to realize how serious this is. I mean I tell him constantly he just think I am overexaggerating. I wanted to have anthroscopy, but I was unsure how long I would be away from dance, plus my dad would never pay for it since he believes there is nothing wrong with. I am so desperate right now. Please help!
