16 years old, surgery #2
I am a 16 year old having my second knee surgery (both on right knee) on Friday, July 16. Last fall I was doing XC and a few weeks into the season began to develop shooting pain in my right knee, so I stopped the running on the dr's order and began 11 weeks of physical therapy to see if the pain and swelling would go away. After physical therapy, my knee wasn't any better, so I went back to the doctor and got an X-Ray and MRI done. My tibia was about 3/4" out of place and my patella was not in place either, I had a severely overstretched ACL and minor cartilage damage. In November I had surgery done that included the following: Lateral release, tibial transfer, ACL and MCL reconstruction, miniscus removal, and a tendon in the back of my knee was tightened (i guess thats what you'd call it). Overall, I now have 4 small screws in my knee and one bigger screw about 1" below my knee in my tibia to hold it in place. The larger screw isnt supposed to be removed until this November, but I currently have a stress fracture around that screw and a large piece of bone from the top of my tibia has broken off and is now resting just below my knee cap. I received the stress fracture and bone fracture in April after I was cleared to participate in P.E. A few weeks after that we were running the mile in PE when my leg gave out and I went to the doctor that afternoon. That was when i found out about the stress fracture and bone fragment. Anyways, I don't understand why the first surgery has turned out terribly and my pain is now worse than it was before surgery. I was not able to run XC, play basketball, or play soccer this past school year as I was on crutches for all of basketball and the stress fracture came at the start of soccer, and right now it looks as if I won't be able to play them this next year either. I dont know what is happening to my leg or why, but I thought that I would post my story on here to see if anyone else has had similar problems.
