Hi lets see, I started having knee injuries at the age of 14, torn meniscus during a basketball game, 4 more torn menicus followed. Had scopes debridment and clean up all 5 tmes except with the fifth I also had articular cartilage damage. There was an osteochondral impaction fracture of the medial femoral condyle. So my OS did a scope and preformed a microfracture. Man the recovery was long and hard, it was 8 months ago and I am worse off now than before the op. The microfracture failed and the defect actually increased in size. So after 4 months of really bad pain OS sent me to a specialist at Baptist Hospital, and she is going to preform OATS (open). I am so happy theres going to be an end to the madness. Pain really sucks and when youre knee is injured it puts a big damper of your life and how you live and do things.

I'm 51 years old three weeks out of meniscectomy and mircofracture of femur and tibia on my left knee. The six-weeks of nonweight-bearing is tedious but necessary to allow the cartilage to reform without excessive force applied. Have researched rehab protocols on the Steadman Hawkins web site and my surgeon concurs. Am now pedalling for 30 minutes (without resistance) 3-4 times/week, doing 100-200 heel-slides, quad sets and straight-leg raises each day without significant pain or swelling. If you've had microfracture, hang in there and keep off it as much as possible.

Hi,
My husband had a torn cartilage in his left knee and was operated on in Dec. of 2004. To this day, it still bothers him and the Dr. keeps saying it takes time, lots of time. Well, here it is almost a year later and it's not quite as bad as before, but still not great. I saw him last week and he said we are on the uphill part now. I sure hope so, I am so sick of a hurting knee. Not only that, I also have back problems with one surgery and possibly another. It's hell to get old. I am 60 and feel older than that at times.

I had knee pain and the doctor said I was losing cartilage...he prescribed glucosime and a new medicine called cartigen. Does anyone know about this....he said the two work very well together and that this cartigen should be taken 6 months on, 6 months off. I am not keen on taking synthetic meds, and asked if I could take MSM alone (this is comparable to glucosime) and he said they worked very well together. Has anyone had experience taking this drug?

Hope you can help me! To make a long story short; I rented a car for a week with a stick shift (i drive an automatic usually), nd found that my left knee wass getting more and more agitated by the use of the clutch!? Over the course of that week, 3 or 4 times i crouched down to pick something up or whatever, felt a huge amount of pain, and then stood up and felt something slip, or move in my nee, until I was fully erect, and then the pain stopped. The real issue i have, is that at the end of the week, I went surfing for the first time, crouched on the board, felt the pain, went to stsnd-up, never actually made it to full ercet position; and i have been on crutches ever since. it seems that that slip, or movement of the cartlidge never happened. My knee blew up, swollen, i went to the hospital because i couldnt straighten my leg anymore! They did x-rays, said that evrything was fine, no torn cartlidge; perscribed ant-infalammatories and crutches, and told me to stay off it for a week; that it will fix itself. well, it has been a week, my knee feels better; but i still cant straigten it! i want to get on with my life!! please help me!
Thanks!

I am a 47 year old active female that began experiencing pain in my left knee 8 months ago. An arthroscopy showed a 15mm missing piece of cartilage on the weight-bearing medial side of my femor. Three months later, I had a COR procedure which is where they move some cartilage from a non-weight bearing portion of the femur and put in into the defect area. I am 5 weeks post-op and would like to know if anyone would like to tell me what their recovery was like. Knowing what to expect will relieve anxiety. Hope to hear from you at jmcreynolds2001@yahoo.com.

I am a 33 year old male that has been
active all my life. I participated
in major college athletics and
was drafted as a professional hockey
player. I tore my ACL in college
and had reconstructive surgery. I was
active following the surgery, returning
to competitive sports and even after
finishing my playing career I jogged
regularly, biked, and lifted weights.
The last several years, I have had
more discomfort when jogging and saw
an orthopedic surgeon who has scoped
my knee twice. There is some
arthritis in the inner compartment of
my right knee, to what degree I'm not really
sure. I have seen 5 different
doctors and received 5 different
opinions basically. Docs have told
me I have anywhere from beginning
stages of an arthritic knee to
grade IV arthritis where I am
to the bone. I am considering microfracture,
ACI, or allographs and was wondering
if anyone has input about their
experience and success with any of these over
the others. Also, any recommendation for
doctors would help.
