After finding this site, I am almost glad that I am not one of the only ones that have this problem. But it is also sad too.
Do they have a cure for this? I am 24 years old and have had pain in my knees for almost 2 years. I wasn't overly active in childhood and teenaged years. Then, at 22, I joined the Army. I was starting to have minor pain from the beginning and then I got injured during a road march. After that, I have been in pain varing from discomfort to extreme amounts. Also suffering from reacurring shin splints and multiple stress fractures. Meds do nothing, don't have time for PT due to the scedule I keep and hectic lifestyle. I can't sit for longer than an hour, trying to run even 2 miles puts me in alot of pain especially going up and down hills and stairs. Jumping or bending is bad too, but tolerable. If there is a cure, please someone tell me cause the doctors I have seen have told me all kinds of things; I'm beginning to think they have no idea what this is. I know I don't exactly.

I am 29 and in good health, but developed chronic pain and swelling in my left knee in June 2001. The initial onset occurred during dance practice one evening. I was a competitive ballroom dancer, practicing 10-15 hours a week, but there was no injury, impact or trauma at the time to cause the pain.
I went though 2 rounds of physical therapy, including the Protonics device, between June and December with no lasting results. In December the right knee developed pain and swelling too, and I started a 3rd round of PT. By March I had so much swelling and pain in both knees that I ended up in a wheelchair (couldn't manage crutches until one knee calmed down enough). Blood test and x rays for arthritis were negative, and MRIs and physical exams showed no meniscus or ligament damage.
After seeing 4 OS and 3 PTs in the state where I live, I flew downt to the Cincinnati Sports Medicine Clinic. Dr. Noyes was brilliant, pointing out that I had patellar tendonitis from "kissing knees" resulting from too much internal rotation in my femurs (congenital). With my degree of malalignment, flexion produced too much stress in my knee joints.
I am very relieved to know that there is a biomechanical reason behind my pain - that it's not without cause or is "all in my head."
Correcting this problem is problematic in itself, probably requiring femoral osteotomy in both legs, but at least I know the source of my pain and swelling. I do pt every day, wear braces to hold my patellas in place and have put my dancing on hold (just for now!!) to manage the swelling. It has yet to disappeared completely.
I've had to go completely outside of my insurance's network of health care providers and have accrued thousands of dollars in medical bills just to get some answers, but for me it has been worth it.
If anyone has similar experiences they can share, has had femoral osteotomy, or has found non-surgical means of remaining physically active, please post your thoughts.
Best of luck to everyone in your search for answers. I wish you much success.

I have been struggling with knee pain since Sept. of 2000. The lining of my knees are inflamed. The left is much worse than the right. I have only been able to work 5 days since the middle of Feb. I currently have been unable to work since early April. I've taken motrin, Naproxin, and am currently taking Celebrex. I don't know that any of it helps that much. I keep them iced alot that is what really helps the most, at least till they get warm again. I am in therapy to get my leg muscles strenghtened. That hurts also, but the doctor says i need to keep at it. I am discouraged at my progress. I was tested fpr arthritis, but that was negative. There also is no cartilage damage. Anyone else have these problems? If so what has helped you?

Through the combination of standing and walking on hard pavements in different occupations I have developed knee aches. While walking slower and bringing the feet to the ground softer has helped, it still aches to the point that I do not wish to exercise. The aches is located just below the patella. I had tried glucosamine with no results. I have no history of major or minor knee problems(other than the current one). Suggestions?

I am in my late 20's and have had severe knee pain since my late teens. I was originally diagnosed with patella femoral syndrome four years ago, got a patella brace, and well nothing has improved. X-rays this year confirmed that my kneecaps are straight rather than grooved, and that they track. Also, lots of cracking and painful grinding. My last visit to the orthapaedist was a let down. I was told to curb my lifestyle and that nothing could be done other than realigning my ligaments and muscles. Most of the stuff that I read about this syndrome says this is a problem that comes and goes, my problem is constant and daily. I would like to hear from people who have dealt with this problem effectively. Currently, I have braces, orthotics, and regular muscle stimulation at physio.

I am, was, a 40-50 miles weekly runner. I have a tendonitis on both knees for more than a year. I was checked by a doctor with all kind of exams, without showing nothing. I do physiotherapy. I am using special soles, to avoid over pronating. I rest for a month, come back running, and the pain return. What else I should do?
