Richter Out With Knee Injury

Richter Out With Knee Injury

February 22, 2000 |

NEW YORK (AP) - Mike Richter, the New York Rangers' lone all-star, sat out Tuesday night's game against New Jersey with an injured left knee.

The 33-year-old goalie is listed as day-to-day and is possible for Wednesday's rematch with the Devils at New Jersey.

Richter was injured Saturday night when he banged his leg against the goal post during the skills competition of the NHL's All-Star weekend at Toronto.

The Rangers said Tuesday that the swelling was down considerably and that Richter was able to ride a stationary bicycle.

The three-time all-star, in his 11th season with the Rangers, won the goalie contest Saturday before surrendering four goals on 15 shots Sunday in the third period of North America's 9-4 loss to the World team.

Richter is 18-19-7 in 44 games with a 2.61 goals-against average.

Adam Graves also missed Tuesday's game due to the death of his son. Jaxon Graves, born prematurely on Jan. 14 along with brother Logan, died Tuesday morning.

The Rangers left wing missed January games at St. Louis, Atlanta and Pittsburgh so he could remain at home with his family.

In addition to Logan, Adam and Violet Graves are the parents of daughters Madison and Montana.

Kirk McLean, who played in only two of the Rangers' previous 30 games, started in goal for New York on Tuesday. He was backed up by Jean-Francois Labbe, who has yet to appear in an NHL game.

On Saturday, Labbe became the fifth goalie in AHL history to score a goal when he did it for Hartford. Labbe, who made 40 saves in a 6-3 victory, was recalled on Monday. Johan Witehall, who also scored for Hartford on Saturday, was recalled Tuesday to fill in for Graves. He has a goal and an assist in two games this season with New York.
