First of all, do you mean knee or patella (kneecap) dislocation?

Then, can you elaborate on the injury? What caused it? Did a doctor have to reduce it/put it back in place? Are you on crutches or in an immobilizer or brace? What sport are you looking to play?

Patella dislocations, which I think are you really talking about, are quite common with teenage, female athletes, myself included. I first dislocated mine was I was a wee bit over the age of 16. So, I was almost still 15.

You should be able to overcome any injury almost and return to sport full-force. Just got to work hard and get the motion and strength back in your knee.

If you answer my questions in your additional details, I will respond back and be able to help you more.

Good Luck

Okay, thanks for the details! So, your muscles have probably started to atrophy which can cause the wobbly/flimsy feeling as a result of trauma and not using the knee. However, you should see an orthopedic who can diagnosis any other damage besides the patella dislocation. Sometimes, cartilage is damaged on the backside of the kneecap or a minor ligament is torn, which usually heals well with adequate rest. You might need more xrays or a MRI.

After you get out of the splint, you might have a patella tracking brace which is a thin black brace that you pull over your knee usually and it holds your kneecap in place.

You will also probably have to do some physical therapy to work to get muscle and range of motion back. It will be a big help in preventing future dislocations (which are more common after your first) by targeting the VMO muscle and strengthening that.

Fishing-

I would definitely go and see another doctor! Especially if the first doctor did nothing but an x-ray. Most knee injuries will not show up on an x-ray and most doctors know this.

Just my 2 cents <shrug>.

I just remembered that a few months ago (late February, early March) I tripped and fell on the treadmill and also hurt my right knee again.

About 3 years ago I was in a glof cart with a friend and we were hit by a car, ever since I have had right knee pain and my knee will lock up and be difficult to move. I went to my doctor and had X-rays taken. Nothing was found and he concluded my pain was due to growing and it would clear up in a few months. That was over 2 1/2 years ago. I have also been noticing that as i walk my right leg will turn inward. Should I consult another doctor?
