A new study shows that trekking poles lessen muscle soreness. What's unique about this study is that the study participants actually hiked up and down a mountain. Previous studies lauding trekking poles were conducted in laboratories or on level ground.

I've never tried trekking poles, but since I often suffer from muscle and joint pain after a day of clomping up and down hills in my hiking boots, I'm considering giving them a try.

A Google search brought me to the Pros and Cons of Hiking Poles on Slackpacker.com, which features one pole-skeptic and one pole-proponent.

Does anyone out there have experience with hiking/trekking poles? Would you recommend them for casual hikers?
