first scope surgery

Hello,
I just had my first surgery (ever). The doctor performed a patella chrondroplasty and removed a rather large cyst behind my kneecap. Other than experiencing horrible pain that meds don't seem to help very well, I am concerned about the healing process. I was given the ice machine as well as the machine that moves my leg back and forth. Should I have been given a hinged knee brace or an immobilizer to help with stability? Any information will help.
