Question:
I work out about 5 times a week. I do everything from step class, cardio kick and body pump. Lately, I have noticed pain in my knees, especially when I do lunges. It doesn't hurt when I walk. I really try to make sure I do certain exercises properly without overextending my knees. Are there any over-the-counter meds I can take?

Dr. Golden
David Golden Dr. Golden is an orthopedic surgeon and the author of the "Knee Pain" chapter in the upcoming "Manual of Pain Management". He has presented numerous scientific studies at orthopedic conferences. In addition, Dr. Golden is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS),the American Medical Association (AMA), and the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA).

Answer:
For most orthopaedic ailments, the mainstay of over-the-counter (OTC) medications includes acetaminophen (such as Tylenol) and/or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIS's, such as Ibuprofen). The acetaminophen is a good pain reliever and the NSAID's help to control inflammation, which is part of the cause of pain. Be sure to check with your doctor before starting any medication. Rarely, in healthy individuals, unwanted side effects can occur, such as upset stomach. Modifying your activities until the pain resolves will help as well.
