Debridement

Overview
Debridement is the removal of stray tissue inside the knee that has torn off from its original location either surgically, by overuse or acute injury. The procedure is usually performed arthroscopically. Debridement generally accompanies other procedures during the arthroscopic procedure.

Detailed Description
Specialist
Orthopedic surgeon

Procedure
The patient is anesthetized either locally or generally, and the surgeon makes a number of small incisions around the knee to make room for the arthroscopic instruments. Before and after performing any additional procedures to the ligaments, bones, or articular cartilage, the surgeon will debride the joint, meaning that he or she removes the stray particles and rough edges of the tissues in the joint to reduce friction and pain, as well as the chance of infection or swelling.

Recovery
Hospitalization: Depends upon major procedure.
