Clinical Overview Symptoms Take Action Diagnosis and Treatment

Patient Actions

Immediate Action
  • Call your doctor! A ligament injury may be a serious injury that may even require surgery.
  • RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation, is the best thing for most injuries for the first 2-3 days.
  • An ace bandage may provide comfort and prevent swelling.
  • Use crutches, if necessary.

See your doctor
If:
  • You feel a popping sensation when you move your knee. This may require immediate treatment.
  • The pain is too much to bear.
  • You sprain your knee more than once.
  • You have knee pain, swelling or stiffness which lasts beyond a few days

To:
  • Get crutches
  • Get physical therapy
  • Plan surgery
