Quadriceps Tendon Rupture

Diagnosis And Treatment

This serious injury requires prompt diagnosis and treatment. If you think you have ruptured your quadriceps tendon, you should be evaluated by a doctor. X-rays can help determine whether the injury is a tendon rupture or a fractured kneecap. Diagnosis can be difficult, however, especially in obese patients, and MRI might be necessary in some cases.

You will probably need surgery to repair the tear. The tendon must be exposed for this surgery, so it cannot be done arthroscopically.

After surgery, your knee will probably be in a cast or brace for at least six weeks up to six months. You may need crutches after the brace is removed, and a prolonged course of physical therapy should be expected.
