MCL Injury

Symptoms

Suggestive of an MCL injury are:

  • Knee giving way/instability of the knee to the side
  • Pain in the knee
  • Blow to the knee from the outside or fall to the side while foot is firmly planted.

Sprains of the ligament are characterized in three degrees of severity:

  • Grade 1, a mild sprain, which does not limit the patient’s function, motion, or strength to any noticeable degree. Tenderness and swelling may result. Physical therapy and rehabilitation are most often prescribed for Grade-1 Sprains.
  • Grade 2, a moderate sprain, characterized by greater swelling and tenderness, as well as some abnormal movement.
  • Grade 3, a major or severe sprain, with obvious abnormal motion and possible complete loss of strength and function.
