Fortunately, even if ligament injuries require surgical repair, it usually does not need to be completed in an emergent fashion. Rather, it can be planned after the initial pain and swelling has subsided. Often, surgeons will wait until rehabilitation (as instructed) is completed to optimize the condition of the knee for surgery.

Aside from avoiding exposure to trauma, no specific prevention is available. Occasionally, athletes will use braces prophylactically to try to decrease the likelihood of ligamentous injury.
